Polishing Travertine Insights

Even if you clean your travertine tiles on a regular basis, they will become dull over time. Polishing travertine in many instances can restore the shine and make the travertine look like new again how often you should polish travertine tiles depends on several factors. One of the more obvious criteria is how much use your travertine tiles receive. The truth of the matter is that polishing travertine does not eliminate scratches. What actually occurs when polishing travertine is that the scratches are disguised by the compounds during the polishing process. This will work fine in some instances where there are very slight surface scratches.

One of the benefits of a polished travertine surface is that the travertine is a bit more impervious to spills. The flip side to this is that a polished travertine surface is more apt to show things if they sit unattended. A large majority of the travertine that is imported and installed is a honed travertine. This honed travertine typically has a large amount of filler. When you polish travertine that has a large amount of fill depending upon the light and angle that you view it at, it will appear to have a blotchy appearance. This is the result of the fill in the travertine not being able to the polished to the same degree as the rest of the stone.

A common misconception is that a shiny polished travertine regardless of the process is all the same. The market has been in inundated with a variety of products that short-circuit the true and tried process for polishing travertine with a virtually carefree end process. One of the products is called monkey pads. These monkey pads are not going to achieve the high quality polished travertine demanding customers should expect to receive. Heaven Sent Floor Care utilizes Italian Craftsmen Polishing Powder (the standard in Italy) to polish travertine floors in Dallas|Plano and the greater DFW Metroplex area.

Be forewarned that Mop-n-Glo and other products that you might find in the grocery store or hardware store that claim to be able to restore the polish to your travertine or other natural stone are only going to result in a great disappointment and additional expense in removing them.

Ask five different professionals. Many times you get five different answers. You are dealing with a contractor. In the past that meant something. A contractor had a license, insurance, a bond, a method of oversight that allowed the consumer to know that they were getting good advice from a trained qualified professional. It's not like that anymore. The stone industry has truly become caveat emptor. BUYERS BEWARE. The purpose of this piece is to educate you on the language of the stone industry so that you can make an informed decision based on concrete facts.
